Diagnosis & Treatment

A TMD can be brought on by a number of factors, but the most common tend to be stress, injury to the joint, arthritis, and a misalignment of the bite that causes tension in the face. When trying to determine the underlying cause of a TMD, we will look at a patient’s teeth (as unconscious grinding is a common symptom), test the mobility of their jaw, and use X-rays to get a better view of the joint. With this information, we will develop a treatment plan to reduce and eliminate all symptoms.

Occlusal Splints

An occlusal splint is an orthopedic mouthpiece we use to treat TMD-related pain. It is designed to be worn at night, and it works by slightly repositioning the jaw into a more relaxed and natural orientation. This allows the joint and surrounding muscles to heal over time, plus it provides a barrier to prevent any teeth grinding. After a few months of consistent use, a patient should be able to go through their day without any TMD symptoms.
